What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is one of the oldest and most commonly used medical techniques, originating in China more than 2,500 years ago. It began with the discovery that stimulating specific areas on the body affects well-being. Acupuncture has evolved into a scientifically studied, world-renowned system of holistic medicine that helps to restore and maintain health, while improving quality of life.

Acupuncture works with the body, harmonizing and balancing energy. It improves circulation, decreases inflammation, releases endorphins to control pain, and allows the body to heal itself more quickly and more completely.

How can Chinese herbal medicine help?

After diagnosing your particular pattern of disharmony, I usually prescribe an herbal formula based on your constitution, environment, and medical condition. Herbal medicines combined with acupuncture accelerate healing significantly. An herbal remedy may come in various forms: capsules, tablets, liquids, powders or teas.

How many treatments are necessary?

It depends on the duration, severity and nature of the condition and your response to the treatment. In some cases, one or two treatments are all it takes. It is generally suggested that you have at least 2 to 4 treatments in the first 4 weeks and evaluate your progress at that point. The goal is to get you to the point where you are coming in only periodically to maintain and promote overall wellness or when a new injury or illness occurs.

What can I expect from a treatment?

The initial visit may run approximately one hour to one hour and fifteen minutes. (Subsequent visits are typically 50 minutes to an hour.) A deep sense of calm and well-being is what patients are able to take with them when they leave the treatment room.

How should I prepare for a treatment?

You should eat a light meal within an hour or two of your treatment. Wear loose, comfortable clothing.

What about the needles?

Acupuncture needles are FDA approved, as thin as a human hair, sterile and disposable. Most insertions are found to be completely painless. Sometimes there is a very mild sensation that only lasts a brief moment. Many patients are surprised to find treatments to be very pleasurable, often inducing sleep or a deep state of relaxation, unique to the experience of acupuncture.
